Bridge 3: Project Statement

Based on our story, this installation represents the inside of the Grand Central clock. Being the heart of our story, the clock is where Jim’s factory resides. For our piece we didn’t want to simply make a closed sphere, we wanted to make an experience. With this in mind we created what is a symbol of the clock, a curved plane that leads to a window looking out at a movie. The movie was shot from the view of the actual clock in Grand Central, giving the viewer a sense of where they are standing in the installation. Keeping an open concept to the structure, this allowed the machines displayed in the front to come into the structure, allowing for a more interactive experience. The machines were surprisingly a very successful aspect of our piece. In the story, all the machines found are pieces to create one main machine, therefore, in the installation the machines used are an accurate representation of the machines in the story. We hid the machines around the installation, and as you walk around you stumble upon different one, once you connect them all they become one big machine. This element sparked curiosity within the audience, after interacting the cardboard plane further helped tell the story. Essentially our installation presents the story of the Mysterious Machines in a three-dimensional form.
