Bridge 1: Please Sit

Please Sit, 2019

“Sit on an object that is not a chair. If necessary, add additional objects to fit comfort. Observe three people while seated. Observe the object as it is a chair. You just designed a chair.

Noam Nayberg,

2019”

Please Sit explores the idea of an event score through “seating”. This score is meant to be performed in the neighborhood of Bushwick (although can be performed anywhere), where there is a wide lack of public chairs/benches. Furthermore, I have been interested in chair design since I first began to study architecture, they are what I call “miniature architecture”. I am also fascinated by the influence that a chair has in a room. As the score itself essentially instructs to experiment with near-found objects to make a chair, I chose to express this project through writing the score on a model of a very ordinary chair. My intention with the model is to set a “foundation” to what a chair is, before going out to explore the infinite possibilities of what a chair can be. This project allows me to interact with my neighborhood through an event score that explores the lack of public seating and my interest in chair design.

Sketches and Process:

Began an idea to write the score on a chair model. My initial model idea was this sort of modern/exotic chair, which I later thought it wouldn’t quite work in the context.

To better express this event score, I went on to create a very ordinary chair model…
