Every Second,

Drawing light/time

EVERY SECOND,

THE PROJECT

For this project, Joelle and I explored the different ways to illustrate distinct properties of light and/or time through the act of drawing—using the broad sense of the term—in a series.

THE IDEA

Our idea was to create 2 glass boxes: one clear and the other opaque representing the two viewpoints of situations happening around the world. One with clear sight and the other unclear and not fully understanding the gravity of world issues.

We all vaguely know some of the things that occur every second, like babies being born or people dying. But, only a few are aware of important facts and statistics. The box on the top, at eye level, would be the first thing the viewer would notice. This box is opaque and the viewer can only see, what looks like moving light at first. But they would have to look down to look at the second box to actually understand.

  • The opaque cube actually contains a “carrousel candle” that rotates inside, creating shadow drawings on the cube. The rotation of the light represents the rotation of our planet. However, as it turns, dark spots appear on the surface of the box. And as it rotates, something happens in the world, either good or bad. Hence, the different shadows and light glares.
  • The second cube is clear. It contains a video projection of a series of facts and numbers of increasingly shocking things occurring every single second.

Our intention is to show how big the world really is and how small every individual really is. We should not have this idea just in the back of our minds, but rather be aware that there are a number of serious things happening every day, every minute and every second around us. To get out of our bubble and actually be fully aware or world issues takes very little effort, even just using google. This is why our piece doesn’t give the viewer the information instantly but they have to bend down a little to actually understand.

It is a way to demonstrate how people view issues and problems in two different ways, clearly or choose to ignore them and not give them enough light.

Creating the carousel*:

*we could not get the can to rotate, so we ended up buying a carrousel candle and manipulating it to get the result we were looking for.

CRITIQUE

The critique was very helpful, Guilia mentioned we did a good job in combining both topics with light and time. Samantha mentioned to maybe separate the cubes for the artificial light and the flame clash and Kathleen the teacher suggested we dim the brightness of the projection, or change the font to white with a black background. As well as flip the cube for the reflection of the carousel to be seen on the ceiling instead of the wall.

In the end, we were able to convey what we had in mind and both, Joelle and I are happy with the outcome.
