M3 process

For the final project, I have created three total artworks of which one is in collaboration with Yvonne and another with Aditi.

Nous, Romainvillois (Video animation/interview)

This project is divided into 2: the video animation and the interview recordings. So to start, I wrote 5 questions in French for Yvonne to ask the Romainvillois that will allow us to understand their view and perspective of the area and community they live in.

  1. Décrivez Romainville en un mot.
  2. Qu’est ce que vous aimez le plus et le moins à Romainville?
  3. Sentez-vous plus chez vous à Romainville ou à Paris?
  4. Quelles sont les différences les plus importantes entre Romainville et le centre de Paris?
  5. Que pensez-vous de la transformation du quartier?

Then with the gathered materials, I took notes of common words people used and had a final list of 7 words: convivial, calm, diverse, changeable, culturally diverse, construction and transformation. I created a video illustration that gathers all these words together in an abstract way. A malleable and changeable entity that gathers different cultures. The big middle distorted circle in the middle represents Romainville and the many little small circles represent the different cultures that come and go and leave their marks on the place. I had a total of 20 small circles going into the big one and changing its color. Romainville started out as a village/forest and after many constructions and transformations it’s trying to turn back to being green, sustainable, and eco-friendly which is why the video started and ends with a green-colored circle or a “green Romainville”.

Yvonne wanted to experiment with including footage from the actual space but we finally agreed on keeping it abstract and clean so it doesn’t take the attention away from the interviews.

Je suis chez moi (Margins posters)

For my margins poster, I mainly wanted to continue off the Romainville Place Study poster I made earlier in the semester.

Since the style of this poster was to imitate the style of the Riso print, I decided to make 3 more posters and include this one as well, then print them all on the Riso.

I wanted the focus of this project to be more about the idea of margins and the marginalized people in general instead of just focusing on Romainville as a place. I started asking myself: who are the margins? and who am I going to represent here? So I did a google search and found out that the margins of society are essentially those who live outside socially accepted norms. These might include the impoverished, people in the penal system, the homeless, the mentally ill, the illiterate, and certain religious and racial groups. These are just some examples and I thought that in the society, we live in basically so many people could be considered margins. So I created the first poster based on this idea.

1st poster:

I started with a blue rectangle on a white background and used the eraser tool to carve out all the different faces.

The third poster is centered around the different cultural, racial, and religious groups, and the fourth poster is centered around the homeless. These are all linked to the title “Je suis chez moi”, showing that these marginalized groups despite the race or living situation, for example, should feel at home and feel like they belong in the society because these aren’t reasons to exclude someone for society.

Romainville (postcards)

The final postcards are collaborations between Aditi and I. We both wanted to create postcards that represent Romainville not only now, but also its past and future as a communal cultural hub. Yet, we decided to create stylistically different postcards. I decided to use Illustrations. We divided the work into 5 postcards each. So, for my 5 postcards, I used illustrated aspects from Romainville’s past, present and future.

The first postcard shows integrity in Romainville and shows it as a community living together.

The second and third represent Romainville’s past: Hemostyl history and forest/village.

The fourth shows a more industrial aspect of the present Romainville with the ongoing constructions.

And Finally, the last one communicates the future of the area with the innovative healthy solutions by the Cité Maraichaire.
