The task at hand is to portray a space through time, the space has to be one formally used for one purpose and now for another. The challenge is how to show the passage of time in a single frame, whilst also displaying your own artistic traits. First, a location had to be chosen, I visited several, but found Pioneerworks in Redhook the most interesting. It is a converted warehouse/slaughterhouse built nearly 100 years ago.
To show time, I displayed in no defined order the space’s two past and present functions, the first being slaughter and the second being an art gallery. By blending the two uses, instead of putting them in juxtaposition, the viewer is given an extreme view. Though the scene is certainly fictional, the piece confuses the brain. Several people who have seen the piece notes that the carcasses almost resemble art due to those on display.
