  • How you ever felt this way about an object you’ve owned?

Yes, for example when I buy new t-shirts, I become more careless with the t-shirts that I  already own. In fact, I start to use my older purchases as a pajama piece so that I don’t have to care about it anymore.

  • How does your final project challenge having this kind of mentality towards objects?

I feel like jewelry pieces have more sentimental values to people compare to the other objects. I’ve never felt this way about a jewelry piece that I’ve owned. I think when it comes to jewelry, it’s the best buy, investment pieces that you can wear for a long time to come. For that people wouldn’t want to be careless with a jewelry piece.

2) Post a draft of your final project design brief:  (page two of this document

  1. PROJECT NAME: Timeless Kombucha Leather Jewelry

2) What are you making and why?

I’m creating a jewelry set that includes a pair of earring, a bracelet and a ring. I’m making it because I believe that jewelry pieces have sentimental value to people, such as a ring passed down from grandmother. While jewelry has always been a way to adorn the body, it also has significant meaning and symbolism. The meaning of jewelry varies based on the piece and materials used.

3) In what ways will this object/design be useful to you over 50 years of change?

My pieces of jewelry will not lose their value over the next 50 years since they are going to emphasize the signification of sustainable design. While wearing those pieces, the awareness of not harming the environment will make me feel conscious. Also the set of jewelry will be timeless with its simple and minimalist design that can be easily adapt to the trend of that time era.

4) How will it be resilient (used in more than one way etc. and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage)?

Kombucha leather is eco-friendly and biodegradable. No extra land, water, or pesticides are required to produce the material. Also since it is made by kombucha culture and contains symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast it can be re-produced/ re-designed by placing it into water and drying out the scoby. Also I’m going to coat the leather with beeswax so that It will be durable in case of contacting with water.

5) What specific event(s) of environmental change will it help you adapt to or address?

It will lessen the fashion industry’s dependence on nonrenewable materials. Also it will lessen the Anthropocene’s harmful effects on environment.

6) What materials will you use, given what you have learned this semester about changing resources and material availability?

Im going to use a kombucha leather (vegan leather) as an alternative to animal leather, and I’m going to use metal for the needle part.

 7) How does your object offer function and aesthetics over time? How does it fulfill the Long-Life Design criteria to the best of your ability

It is going to fulfill the Long-Life Design Criteria with its simple DESIGN, ENVIRONMENTAL-FRIENDLY materials, cheap COST. Also it’s going to be easily REPAIRED.
