New Earth: is learning from history in order to move forward into the future

I had the opportunity to listen Tattfoo who is an NYC based artist that focuses on issues relating to ecology, sustainability and healthy living. He joined to our sustainable systems class and gave us a 60 minutes speech. His work is project-based, ephemeral and educational in nature. I was really inspired by him and his way of addressing the realities of life and the solutions to increase social resiliency. He talked about duality and absence of “we” and proved his claim by stating white light going in to the prism on one side turns into spectrum of colors. My point of view on life has completely changed after I listened him. In point of fact we are all one; all of are connected since we belong to same class and share the same air. We all share the same earth for that we need to pay more attention to environmental issues and work to raise awareness on serious threats. We are all belong to a chain of being, bad use of environmental sources might result in fragmentation of the system.

He constantly highlighted the idea of  “LOVING  YOURSELF,” “LOVING THE WORLD” and “LOVING ANOTHER.” This themes reminded me of my 30 pieces that I created by inspiring from Hilma Af Klint’s piece ” The Dove.”  While I was creating my pieces, I paid attention to answer these questions which are similar to his point of view on the meaning of life:

  • Is the universe forge by the web of connections.
  • Is everything connected?
  • Where do you find meaning in your life?
  • What are your values? What do you represent? What do you want to embody?
  • Do you love yourself?
  • What is your ideal self? What does it mean to be your highest self?
  • Do I treat myself with the love and respect I truly deserve?
  • Do the people I surround myself with add any value to my life?
  • Do I love myself as much as I expect others to love me?

Furthermore, he talked about rituals and described why we need rituals. He stated that ritual is essential since it is stopping time, capturing a moment and make the ordinary; extraordinary. Also ritual helps the person to cultivate meaning from the ordinary.
All new rituals we design should be spiritual and can be performed by anyone with ready, easily available objects and materials. Besides he highlighted that cultures have been creating  by having a group of people sharing the experience together.

He also talked about seasons and their meanings and I was really impressed by his thoughts..

SPRING: New start · New growth · New project · Breakthrough · Conception · Initiation · Inspiration

SUMMER: Fertility · Heat

FALL: Harvest · Offering · Seeds saving · Introspection

WINTER: Personal renewal · Honoring family, friends and ancestors · Death and rebirth · sadness that cleans · Letting go
