History of Fashion Final Paper Proposal

Date: 1999

Context: From the manga Nana

Artist: Ai Yazawa

Designer: Vivienne Westwood (90s)

I choose this image because Nana is one of my favorite manga, it captures 90s Vivienne Westwood, which is a brand that I also love a lot. It is undoubtedly that Vivienne Westwood is one of the lead of the Punk fashion. In the 90s, as most fashion trend in Japan is about sweet and school girls, Nana has start a trend of Punk, and create a new standard of beauty among the girls. There are lots of pieces from Vivienne Westwood appear in this manga, they performed really well on the characters, with their aesthetic as well as personality. Nana has always be a source of my inspiration, there are some elements from the 90s Japanese punk culture transformed in to my designs.

Date: 1991

Context: From the manga Sailor Moon

Artist: Naoko Takeuchi

Designer: Karl Lagerfeld

Sailor Moon is a iconic manga that I also love a lot. There are a lot of documentation about fashion in the 90s. However, it is different from Nana, as the trend in Sailor Moon is more elegant and feminine. I love to see fashion items from the real world portrayed in manga, which gives me a new perspective towards the dresses. This dress is from Chanel Spring/Summer 1992.
