SS: LESEC EAST RIVER COMPOST YARD

The compost yard field trip is another educational experience for me as I don’t have any prior knowledge of composting. (shameful)

However, I learned a lot from going into the compost yard and listen to the demonstrator explain the process. I’ve gain more knowledge of the compost process:

Composting repurpose organic material like food waste, wood shavings that would otherwise gets transferred to landfill far way. And the result could be turned into energy and biogas.  Food waste doesn’t decompose properly in landfill because of the lack of air.

The compost process starts with laying a big pad of wood chip and dump food scraps on top, then cover again with wood chip to make a sandwich.

-Browns add oxygen bulking agent.

-The pile keep its temperature to 100 degree even during winter time.

-blowers help ventilation so the pile doesn’t have to turn for the first month.

If my notes were correct, this location compost a million pound of material per year.

At the end of the field trip, I was able to get a cup of soil as the result of composting and I brought it home for my plants.

I think the composting system to be more accessible so it’s easier for more people to participate like myself.
