Interview

Name: Mira

Nationality: American

Major: Strategic Design

Q represents me, A represents Mira

Q: I am going to ask you about Entwistle’s and Douglas’s “two bodies”, their concept is that business women wear different kinds of clothes, so they have two bodies, one is for work, and one is for home. For work, they wear more professional and tight clothes, and for home, they wear loose and comfortable clothes. And do you have this concept of two bodies in your life?

A: So, basically what I wear outside is more formal, and I don’t really wear sweats, not even, barely tights, except when I am working out. Cause I just feel like, at least in the city, people dress, people take time and considerations into dress themselves every day. So I feel like I should put in the same efforts, just so at least we respect each other. But at home, I dress super casual, shorts and tank top and that’s all.

Q: How do you feel the fabric on your skin?

A: So, I do yoga a lot, the fabric is definitely the priority when it comes to choosing the needs, or decisions involves the stretch, flexibility, longevity. I like it stretch more, and for casual wear, of course, I like comfy. One thing that is really important for me is that turtle necks cannot be itchy.

Q: Ok, good. And do you like to wear your clothes loose or tight?

A: Emmm, I actually like it tighter. I prefer leggings over sweats. I like to wear tights so that I can feel my body, and I like how it feels on my body too.

Q: When your dress, do you have any kinds of social motivations? In our seminar class we learned about Marcus Samuelsson, he is wearing converse to culinary schools, like cooking school. He is not allowed to wear sneakers to the kitchen, but he is doing it to rebel against the rules, do you have any this kind of experience?

A: Back home, I used to go barefoot, we are not really supposed to go barefoot. I just do it, because it is not allowed, I want to break the rules, just like Marcus did.

Q: Does your garment make you feel a certain way?

A: Yeah, yeah, I dress depending on the occasions, so I am going on a date, I will try to make myself more attractive and more appealing in some ways.

Q: If you are going to a more fancy party, would you dress up differently?

A: Yeah, I would try to get myself to the level, dress up nicely.

Q: Do you know the history of the garments, like the design history of the garments that you wear?

A: Umm, I am actually not sure about the history of clothing, but I kind of know a little bit like denim jeans.

Q: How did you know?

A: It is also for my fashion studio and seminar class actually, we are learning about the history of social aspects of what we are wearing.

Q: Ok, that’s all, thank you so much for answering my question:

A: You’re welcome!

Reflection:

I was very comfortable talking with my interviewee since she is my suitemate. We talked quite often during the week. Although it was kind of awkward for me to talk with a native speaker while recording, Mira felt comfortable talking about the topics that I brought up during the interview. She was trying to answer every question clearly and seriously in order to help me with the project, thus I do not think I had any troubles during this interview.
