Seminar: REFLECTION

My final seminar research paper is based on the German singer Klaus Nomi. I had never heard of this artist before, until my friend who studied him in her seminar class. I was strongly attracted by Nomi’s weirdness and uniqueness. After a few research about Nomi, and saw multiple photographs of his costumes, I sensed a style that I could utilize in my designs. I was inspired both by his stage and everyday outfits. Hence three designs were created by me. In my research, I found out that he wore costumes that were made of plastic or PCV, and most of the outfits were black and white, which was why all of my designs were black and white. I chose to make the design on the left-hand side.

All of our designs were created before composing the final essay, I thought there might be changes to the designs since I might have seen more perspectives of him through more research. However, during the middle of the essay, I thought my designs were perfectly related to his style, and I added a bit of my style into it as well, which were the wire parts. I went along with his upside-down effect, bigger on the top, and gradually got smaller at the waist area. I imaged the wire piece being the criticisms that he received like swords, however, he did not back up or stopped doing his performances. Nomi turned the criticism or judgments of him being like an alien into his style. Initially, I did not think of the outfit like this, but after I had done more research that the wire piece could actually be interpreted this way. The more I started with my essay, the more I felt my designs were connected with Klaus Nomi in my opinions.
