Intro to Fashion Studies: LP Post #1

“Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and future foretold.”

Fashion is a visual poem that manifests unique and personal stories without verbally telling others. The limitlessness allows the wearer to express themselves in ways that others have not presented themselves before. This concludes as to why fashion is so immensely personal because anyone can stylize themselves without any limits. While poetry utilizes the power of literature and language in order to tell personal narratives, fashion appropriates clothing and bodily adornments to tell personal stories of the past, present, and future.

I agree that fashion is personal, but I also believe that fashion can be intensely universal. Knowing that fashion is a trend and a form of self-expression, fashion can be both intensely personal and universal. One can stylize themselves in a way that speaks personality and stories; however, this can solely become a universal trend that no longer becomes personal nor intensely personal as it used to before. I believe that when a specific look attains global attention, it loses that inherent narrative especially in today’s society where the origin of it is blurred because many designers update their designs based on the universal trend. Especially in today’s society where individualism is valued, fashion becomes very personalized and serves as a personal narrative. However, there is still this ongoing problem of originality that still lingers in our society because of how trends are easily copied and reproduced.

“Fashion is made manifest in material forms. It demands study in the same way that ancient artifacts are made meaningful by archaeologists: through careful excavation.”

Fashion is documentation of history as it leaves behind footprints that allow future generations to learn about the overall mood and trends during that era. The study of fashion allows us to understand the atmosphere during that era as it enhances our understanding of the attitudinal changes throughout history. This being said, fashion also needs attentive examination and as it speaks further than telling us the trend during that specific time period.

I agree that in order to understand fashion, people need to excavate it like they examine ancient artifacts. However, I believe that fashion is not necessarily presented in material forms. Fashion does not just simply end with understanding the material form, but you need to study the overall mood and the historical events that took place because fashion adapts to the environment and often times is linked with the atmosphere and the state of the environment. The style adapts to the mood of the era as many a times, fashion depicts the overall feel of the time. I believe that demanding study in both material forms and everything surrounding will definitely allow a clearer and knowledgeable study of fashion.
