A Narcissist’s Lamp Shade- Final Product

Outline of project:

To create a product that can be utilized in our everyday lives using recycled/ used goods that we have found. The guidelines for this project was based on the extension of the life of the raw materials that we implement in our product, the usability of the product, reusability of the materials as well as its disposal.

Research and Ideations:

I started thinking of what I wanted to construct pretty early on. I knew that I wanted to create something out of found wood after visiting the Mebl Furniture store where I saw how old wood was used to construct so many beautiful new sustainable furniture. My initial idea was to create a laptop table out of wood that I would find, however I found it very difficult to find wood that was solid enough as well as wood that was of an appropriate scale. My idea then progressed into creating lamp shades as I have just always been interested in how so many lamp shades are of a certain height, form and structure and was thinking of different ways in which I could remodel it.

Materials:

  • Leftover wire mesh from a friends’ space and materiality project
  • Synthetic vinyl string
  • Cardboard

Documentation of Final Process:

I used the three found materials to construct my own lamp shade and thought that I could wrap the wire mesh into my own face in order to add a very peculiar signature to it being a piece done by me. After using the mesh and working into my face I found that I needed to rework into the mesh in order to make it look more like a face (creating more depth). I called this piece, “A Narcissistic’s Lamp Shade” due to the fact that it is a lamp shade of me and thinking of it being in an actual setting could be quite unusual. I used the found synthetic vinyl string to attach the two heads together as well as the reused cardboard (base). Below is the documentation of my process.
