I started by creating a hue circle in Illustrator.
I then chose to use a split complimentary color scheme, including yellow-orange, cyan, and blue-violet. I also included tints and shades of these hues in the color scheme.
I next outlined a pattern and repeated it to be in a three by three grid.
I then went in with the chosen color scheme and filled each unit with different colors to create the effect above.
