2D – Project 1 Reflection

Reflection:

I really enjoyed this project. I think the Walking as Drawing assignment gave me insight as to what I should focus my sketchbook and large-scale drawings on. Throughout the walking assignment, I noticed that each page I created per walk/day had it’s own style and sensibility based on how I was feeling during the walk and what I encountered. I was therefore inspired to focus on how mindset can influence art-making, and challenged myself to try to visually create what my headspace felt like.

Overall, though, I was really proud of the progress I made on this assignment. I think that the final drawings I made were successful in how they conveyed emotion, especially my first drawing which I consider to be complete. This project was definitely a learning experience for me, I am happy with the amount that I got done within the two weeks, and will continue to work on this drawing in the upcoming weeks.

I wanted to take the good parts out of my sketchbook and use them in the large-scale drawing. I consider the first drawing I did to be completed and fairly successful. I made lots of layers of mixed media that added to the feelings I was trying to convey. As for the second drawing, I was not sure if the project itself is completed yet, and kept going back and forth in my mind with whether or not I should add more to it. I think that I need to be looser with my movements. This drawing was definitely more of a challenge for me than the last drawing I did for this project. I think I was much stiffer because I was so aware of my process in the last drawing, and I wanted them to be visually related. However I ended up doing so without realizing how much it would hold me back. I plan on continuing on with it past the project’s due date to allow myself to be more experimental with process and materials. I will update this Learning Portfolio post once I work on it some more.
