The culminating project in my freshman year integrative studio and seminar classes was a research project about redesigning a monument in New York City. We visited three monuments and then chose to focus on Columbus Circle and much of the controversy that currently surrounds it. I created the new monument to honor the indigenous people that were treated so brutally by Columbus and his men while still acknowledging the tremendous voyage that Columbus made across the Atlantic Ocean. I incorporated elements of my interest such as sculpture and ceramics to make the model of my newly redesigned monument. I used clay, which is a medium that I feel extremely connected to, to sculpt three trees and a small-scale version of a statue of Columbus. The trees are the main focus and they stand to represent the groups of indigenous people. This project was a congenial ending to my first semester at Parsons and I feel as though I was able to display skills that I have not been previously able demonstrate.
