Bridge 4 & 5 final: Culture Jamming

-Project description:
what is culture jamming?
culture jamming is a movement to critique a culture or a social problem, artist use their work to represent how social problem exist in our world and make a art try to change this kind of issue. In my project, my topic is about the surrogacy, as the research I did online, in my opinion commercial surrogacy should not be exist and I strongly recommended adoption instead of commercial surrogacy.

-Proposal and initial research and first ideas:
1)Inspiration:
My topic of this bridge 4 is about the surrogacy. My concept of this project is about we should born our own baby instead of buying a baby from others. After discuss with classmate and professor, I started to focus my project on how to develop the baby with the money.
I get this idea by a TV series called “The Handmaid’s Tale”

2)Start a proposal
Outcome:

Process of the proposal:

Question about proposal:
1.What part of culture do you want to jam or offer a critique?
As I research online, I find out the surrogacy was a big problem all over the world especially India, in India commercial surrogacy has been legal in India since 2002, a practice that has been fully taken advantage of by many stars in the Hindi film industry. So in this project, I am jamming the culture in India.

2. What’s the message you want to share with your audience?
The massage I want to share about is the surrogacy really hurt the society by lower the women social status, increase the criminal and create ethical problem. Because of this kind of social problem, we should stop those commercial surrogacy and born our own baby instead of buying baby from others.

3. What kind of material/medium you are planning on using: photography, video, collage, painting, performance art, sculpture…etc.
The material I plan to use are several piece of glasses, 3D baby model, red ink, paper money and tissues.

4.Which artist or Culture Jammer (that we have covered in class or you saw at the Guggenheim or you have been researching on your own) are you looking at for inspiration? Make sure to include an image of their work that you find inspiring.
The inspiration I have was comes from a traditional wind chime. Wind chimes are a type of percussion instrument constructed from suspended tubes, rods, bells or other objects that are often made of metal or wood.

-Final Project

class critique: color isn’t unit; red paper hide the baby; rope is too rough, money is kind of intervene, better money tags words need to be print.

2)second draft

teacher critique: no bow, change the bow to the flag, like Christmas tree, with money tag

3)Final draft

material: iron, photoshop shop, fish wire, bell

detail:

Base on the research I did online, I make my work’s topic as “baby wind chime”. This is inspired by a book called “The Handmaid’s Tale”. With the rapid development of technology, more and more people are choosing to have their babies in a new way–surrogacy. Surrogacy is a method or agreement whereby a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy for a couple, who then becomes the infant’s parents and supporters. In this way, it assists people who are incapable of having their babies, like gay or infertile parents, in pursuing a better family life. However, it also brings serious social problems, such as abuse of women’s rights, ethical issue and social instability. In this work, I try to represent the irony of an industry that seems like it is designed to help people but actually hurts them. In my work, they baby are colored differently represent the different race they are, and the cushion under their body are made by money from different country also represent who they are and where do they come from. The glasses represent the surrogate’s mother provide them a place to born. The most important things is the money tages, which shows most information of the baby and price they trade to exchange this baby. Finally, I made my work as a wind chime which hang on the baby crib. I try to make irony about this social problem.

Written Research/Seminar

-Planning:What initiated this project? How did previous Seminar and/or Studio assignments build into this? What specific research steps did you take? Was there a question you wanted to answer? How did these research findings play out in the project itself? At what point did you make certain connections between the research, writing, and Studio-making processes

My initiated in this project is inspired by studio class, I watch TV series called “The Handmaid’s Tale”. My studio and seminar class was perfect  match to each at this project. In the studio class, I get this idea about surrogacy by watching that series. However, when I started to know more informations to develop my idea which is coming from the research I did in the seminar class. At the seminar class, I find a lot of article and site each of them individually. During the research, I started to find more and more evidence to prove my point of view about the surrogacy. Not only the news and report, but also people’s experience of surrogacy also convince me that surrogacy should’n exist especially in commercial way.

– Show what was explored/ researched/ made/ written in Studio and Seminar. Write a clear description of each item. Show how what you researched in seminar influenced studio and vice versa.

my research also bring me a lot of ideas about how the surrogacy effect people’s life by each individual examples,  and I use metaphor to involved them into my studio project, such as the money tags were inspired by the research paper. In my research paper, I write about surrogacy abuse the women’s right, it make me started to want make this point into my studio work, so I write the information about the surrogate mother into money tags. During the research, I also find out the surrogacy was actually been used in worldwide, so I make each babies looks different colored, which represent they were coming from different race. And for express the meaning of the trading, I use the money fold them into the cushions  to express the meaning of trading, and in each of babies, their cushion was made of different country’s money. During the research, I try to make the whole piece looks more like a toys hang on the baby crib, to make a high contrast of the cute appearance  and cruel meaning.

-Show your thought process about your Seminar Bridge 4. What does your Bridge4 Seminar project communicate? How did the research process affect your understanding and then your writing/making? What is most successful or interesting about this project?

I think in my bridge 4 project, seminar and studio class was communicate very well each of them could make my work become better through the process of making and writing. Before, I wasn’t think about how the making and writing could really connect together. However, in this project, I did the wall text which are coming from the research paper I did,  it really explain how I did for the studio class and give my work with more meaning explanation. The most successful and  meaning things in this project was how text and research paper are connected to each other and help each other developed.

-Seminar/studio looking ahead to Integratives 2:

Why is this project important to your learning? What does it reveal about your interests? What were the most important research steps that you learned/engaged in Seminar? What about in Studio? What new questions do you want to pursue in Integratives 2 and beyond? How might this project generate another?

This project important to my learning through make me become more organize in research and thinking. It reveal about my interest in doing the mix medias and search I did. The most important research steps that you learned/engaged in Seminar and studio which is the hearing about the feed back and really change from it.  In the future class I want to learn more while in the process and feedback from critique.
