Body Hybrid Casting Project ”ok“

Project Name: Ok

Artist Statement:

For this project, what I have done is create a jewelry rack. Jewelry has been worn by humans since the stone age. At that time, the jewelry box was introduced. The history of the jewelry box can be dated back centuries. At first, the jewelry box was known as jewelry caskets. In the earlier years the jewelry box was designed and created by skilled craftsmen.  The material used was metal, finished with gold, silver, copper and ivory. Based on this the jewelry box began to have its own value even without jewelry inside. Besides the jewelry box’s own value, another reason make me choose this as the topic because of the jewelry box has the most close relationship with our body. Humans wear their jewelry everyday, it carries our stories and emotions. These are reasons that I want to do something related with the jewelry box.

To be able to create this jewelry box, I started to collect more information about ways of making it online. At this time, the jewelry organizer attracts my attention, comparing the original jewelry box to the jewelry organizer which has more design possibilities and can store more jewelry.  I started to watch the different videos online to see how other people make it.  Based on the research I did, I thought to make my work related to the topic of jewelry boxes.  I decided to use the part of body as a way to build my project.  For my rough draft, I did three examples, the first two all related to the hand, and the last one was related to face.

Finally, I decided to use the example of a hand, because of gesture. From the research, I was inspired by the gesture, because every hand gesture has its own meaning specially for people who could not able to speak, gesture is a sign of body language. Base on this, I used the sign of “ok” to encourage people that every day is a new day.  The color of the hand that I have choose is black, it represents the difficulties that we might face in our life, but “ok” sign is way of encouraging people never give up and to fight for their life. The ring on the hand shows this piece has a relationship with jewelry and the tray on the bottom uses the gray color to match the black color by using the same color tone.
