Photography Final: Ego

For my final in photography I contemplated the idea of ego and its relation to chaos. Our egos fit under the theme of fact vs fiction for they made-up entirely of a fiction yet they seem to relay a type of truth or fact. There are so many material objects in our lives now-a-days that we tend to lose ourselves behind them and their superficial meanings; Egos are often chaotic and complicated as a result. Through cluttered images I tried to portray how it feels to become overwhelmed by what or who we are. In these 5 photos there is clutter as well as hidden faces and objects. Mouths and eyes are juxtaposed against scraps of paper, jewelry and plant life. All these things are symbols of “who I am” or “what I’m made up to be”. But In the end, these things only cover me up in chaos, they hide the truth.

these are four of the photos that I’ve been working on for my final project. One of them is a long strip that’s 12×30 and contains close up photos of my body to explore the role of gender in my life, and to try and take the bigger context of what I look like out of the picture so that maybe the body parts are mysterious and you don’t know who they’re connected to.

The second strip contains 3 different photos that I put together on one 12×30 strip to send to the Durst. The first one is about the senses, seeing and hearing a concert. I have the concert in color and my eyes in black and white to juxtapose the wildness of the venue and the solidarity of experiencing it. This fits into gender as well because in the large wild venue you can slip into the crowd and be a nameless person without labels. The second photo is of me in an apple orchard where I look very androgynous, which fits into my idea of gender. The last three photos are also of me in the apple orchard, and I like the symbolism of the apple as an object that divided and shamed the genders because of the garden of Eden, and represents the inferior gender of womanhood.

Updates on Final Project

For my final project I have been working towards the idea of nature and its role in New York City.

So far I have shot and edited these 2/5 photographs

I feel the first one is more successful so I only have one that I am going to use for my project.

For the future, I am going to work more on the placement and poses of the model in the photograph. It seems to work better when the model seems to be intertwined almost in the environment of nature and the city is the backdrop. The poses of the model are an important aspect of the final photograph.

Within next week I am going to shoot more photos to edit in class next week.

Project Update-Final

For this week I shot different situations using a similar method. I took all of these images through a crystal, which gives them the distorted/moving quality. When I stare at them for a while I start to see things I din’t at first. I’m going to continue using this method for the rest of the project, and continue changing my subject matter.

Update Project idea:

1. WHAT: Windows and how they can distort an image if taken with a model on the other side while photographer is on the outside.
2. HOW: For these photos I will take photos of models with genuine emotions while being on the other side of a window- this showing essentially two photos in one.
3. WHY: I have chosen this topic but I want to step outside of my box of normally taking straight on photos. I want to use an obsticle such as a window to expirement with the ways in which an surface can distort/enhance a photo.
4. Initial sketches / photographs and/or images you have already created that inspired your project or begin to visualize your project:
