Bridge Project, Part II

I am very proud of the work we’ve done to make this project possible. From group meetings and texts, working around each of our busy schedules, outsourcing equipment and making our final set-up and visuals, we worked incredibly hard to make and document this intervention. It was also a fun project to photograph, because it was so interactive and visually beautiful. This was not an easy project to pull off. I truly don’t think there was anything more that would have made this project better. It took planning, logistics, trial and error, and a much needed rehearsal day to get everything to go as planned. We were able to adapt quickly to problems we encountered, like the park being closed after sundown, and ended up creating a project that was stronger than we had originally planned. We chose to project our videos on an empty window next to the Stonewall Inn, and across the street at Christopher Park. It encapsulated the space with sound and visuals, and allowed the intervention to be much more interactive. It meant a lot to me that my partners were so receptive to collaboration, and that we chose an area that’s very dear to me. This place truly has personality and a rich history. I’ve seen first-hand that West Village locals care about their village’s history, and it was heartwarming to see so many people interact with our intervention. We even met some people that knew Marsha! As a queer person, it meant a lot to me to honor this monumental moment in history in the space where it happened. This project ended up being incredibly meaningful for all of us, and for the locals who interacted with it. One man came up to me and said, “Thank you for doing something like this.” That was the first time I’ve felt like the art I make can make a difference in the world. I’ve never been thanked for making something, and I’m so proud that the work we did made such a positive impact on someone. It means a lot to feel heard, and Stonewall certainly has quite the story to tell. I’m proud to have honored that.
