Time Unit 2 Project

The title of my project is “Full Circle”. When first going out to take photos for this assignment, I went to Washington Square Park (knowing that it is a busy place filled with people) in hopes of catching decisive moments and even that photo containing “punctum”. Looking back at them, I realized I had a lot of photos of performers, children playing, people reading, and people interacting with one another. Another realization was that there was only one person who showed up in two photos – Peter Chinman, the man writing personalized poems. Having two photos of him, I knew I wanted to include him in my narrative, which also made all of my images of people reading useful (keeping the theme of writing, reading, and literature in general). For my 5 out of 20 narrative, I wrote about a little girl who approaches the man writing poems and asks for one as well as the overall scene at Washington Square Park. For my final assignment, I then expanded on this idea and got someone to model a few shots for me, writing the story so that it was about a girl who starts off her day reading some poetry books in her room. Looking outside her window, she decides to go out and explore a little, stumbling across a park where she finds a man writing poems. After receiving one, she reads it over and takes it back home with her. I wanted my narrative to do a 360 – starting with poetry, and ending with poetry. When presenting my piece, I chose to set up my narrative so that it was accordion style, allowing it to both stand on its own and give viewers a glimpse of the whole story at once. My images were not only placed in consecutive order, but placed in groups where other images have similar colors so that each page has somewhat of its own color scheme. I found critique very helpful and plan to change the writing so that it’s (1) more poetic to reflect the theme of the narrative, and (2) give the ending more of a takeaway.
