Artist Statement – January 2019

Focusing on nature’s positive effects on our mental and physical wellbeing while learning new ways to apply it to both art and design, I always find myself making work where I create calming settings, either through sculptural pieces/installations and 2D work (occasionally placing myself in them through the use of self portraits) that enhance the spaces they’re placed in or by starting to actually conceptualize whole spaces. I want others to feel good about the work, so I keep in mind the texture of the materials I’m using as well as what type of colors are being put together when working on my fine art. I use materials like fibers, wood found in nature, patterned papers and resin with acrylics and oil pastels, mostly utilizing warm, earthy tones. A piece of mine can range in size anywhere between 20 inches to 7 feet. In today’s day and age where everyone lives hectic, fast-paced lives, I feel that it’s important for people to stop every now and then and allow themselves to feel peaceful, which can be achieved through this return to nature. I benefit from the process of creating these objects and spaces in how it’s therapeutic for myself.

As an aspiring designer who is now learning how to combine her fine art and new design work, I am in awe of design’s ability to positively affect people in it’s own ways when it comes to their mental state and emotions. Mixing this ability with my own thoughts on nature and my drive to design sustainably, I have no doubt that the future holds great things.
