The Royal Tenenbaums Movie Response

  1. Character: Richie Tenenbaum
  2. Notes (clothing, colors, objects): Tennis racket, coat jacket + pants (yellow ochre), sweatband (red, blue, white), camera, creamy white, white bags, red, sunglasses, red drink with celery stick (alcoholic?), yellow tent, family portrait, trophies, glowing world globe, planet pattern, falcon/hawk (Mordecai), bloody bondage on hand, green, light brown (bricks), blue, wrist band (black), scissors, white striped shirt, shaving razor, white (hospital), hospital gown with pants, orange/pink, record player, Ruby Tuesday (Rolling Stones music in general while in tent with Margot), his eye (loses sight in one), wedding suit, white rose (funeral)
  3. Possible symbols of his identity: His sweatband is an iconic article of clothing that he wears throughout most of the film and it is red white and blue like the flag – he wears it although viewers find out that he no longer does tennis towards the beginning of the movie / his bird Mordecai and the act of freeing him just to have him later return with more white feathers – Richie says that this can be due to a traumatic experience, which he himself has had / His tent seeing as its a place where you can often times find him (this is the very first place he goes to once leaving the hospital) / His razor (he uses it to both shave off his beard, which you see him with throughout most of the movie, and attempt suicide)
  4. History of symbols: Sweatbands are generally worn by athletes (these are usually used to wipe sweat from your forehead when playing a sport but have also been known to be used as a badge or fashion statement) / In old Egypt, a falcon was a symbol of the rising sun – falcons were also considered the king of all birds in the world and are seen as leaders / Tents are meant for protection and security when sleeping outdoors (helping to establish a space that is your own), and it is ironic that he uses it indoors / His razor is meant to be used for shaving – which he does when shaving off his beard (having covered his face with it throughout most of the movie) – but is unfortunately also something that people often times use to commit suicide, which he attempts
  5. Things I saw that reminded me of my home and/or things: His record player reminded me of my own record player (whereas his is beige and mine is yellow ochre – like his suit) / He has a few family photos which reminds me of the ones I have / His planet patterned curtains (as well as the overall planet pattern seen in a few different places) reminds me of my fascination with star shapes + star patterns and how you can find various stars in my room
