Ýr Jóhannsdóttir (AKA Ýrúrarí) – Fibers

Inspirational keyword: My keyword was “fibers”. I got to this word by first thinking about my Sustainable Systems class and how I recently had to naturally dye different samples of wool and cotton using a red cabbage, which made me think about fibers in general, which led me to this artist who’s tongue sweater I remember having seen not too long ago on Instagram.

Bio / Artist Statement: Ýr Jóhannsdóttir is a textile designer/artist based in Iceland who graduated with BA in textile design from Glasgow School of Arts in 2017. “The artist name Ýrúrarí was created in 2012 by Ýr Jóhannsdóttir. The work of Ýrúrarí is mostly done by knitting and working with the possibilities of new visual elements knit can create in spaces and on the human body in a way of illustrating the everyday three dimensional space. Ýr’s knit works are on the wide spectrum from hand knitting figurative fun pieces on old jumpers to machine knitting abstract and complex mathematical textiles, working with the technique of weaving, OP art and making dimensions meet on the surface of knitted fabric.” (http://www.yrurari.com/about/)
