Interior Lives:

  • What emotions did you feel?: Walking throughout the exhibit, I felt vaguely claustrophobic, felt as though I was almost trespassing and getting very personal with the subjects of the photos, and was even able to relate to quite a few of them despite coming from different backgrounds.
  • Did anything feel familiar?: The themes and ideas brought up in Thomas Holton’s series  felt very familiar to me in how it dealt with the inner workings of a family over time (at times I was able to relate certain things back to my own family’s experiences), and the idea of having two identities (in this case, Chinese-American) in An Rong Xu’s work was relatable in how I myself deal with my Cuban-American identity (being a third generation).
  • Did anything feel unfamiliar?I felt that I couldn’t really relate to Annie Ling’s series in how I’ve never been exposed to a lifestyle such as theirs and could never truly understand it.

The Future City Lab:

  • What do you feel are the two most important challenges New York City faces?  And what are some possible solutions?:
  • Transportation: Easier transportation could be achieved through a new development called Bus Rapid Transit (BTR) and through creating new transit lines for the outside boroughs rather than have everything concentrated in Manhattan.
  • Incorporating nature and the outdoors: This could be done through creating more parks wherever possible for more outdoor activity, having larger windows on buildings, including rooftop spaces, and incorporating more gardens and plant life both in and outside of buildings.
