Reflection:
My assigned Home Moves was to record the different sounds my bathroom makes. To do this, I first went to the school’s equipment center to borrow a Zoom H6N recorder, found a day when my suite mates weren’t home, and explored our bathroom (making sure to readjust the angle/position of my video camera every time I’d start to record a new sound as documentation). As final deliverables, I’ve created a silent video montage of the process for documentation and an audio file containing all of the different sounds I’ve collected, overlapping some of the sounds as I did. This project has given me a bit of a new outlook on our bathroom – never before have I paid that much attention to all the small details that make that space what it is. As I would go about recording one or two sounds, I’d suddenly discover a new sound I hadn’t initially thought of when first thinking about “sounds that my bathroom makes”, and I would record that before being led to yet another new sound and another and another. This has shown me that it is worth going into other rooms that I’ve grown used to and really start to focus on the small details that help create their character, exploring them almost as if they were new in an attempt to learn more about them.
