Berger – “Publicity”

  1. How seeing his presentation was different than reading the chapter?

Seeing his presentation was different than reading the chapter in how the video emphasized the time in which the presentation/writing was made, and it was helpful to see the visuals as a part of a video as opposed to the cropped still photos of the advertisements shown in the written chapter (especially given that everything he is talking about has to do with advertisements and advertisements are meant to be viewed in their specific location with an audience).

  1. What do you agree with? Why?

I agree with using older references, such as oil paintings, to base certain design choices off of. Oil paintings are associated with wealth as well as many other things, so already an advertisement would be sending clear messages to its audience if it chose to reference such a painting – if oil paintings send off the message that advertisers are looking for, then it makes sense to look back at how things were done in the past.

  1. What do you disagree with? Why?

I disagree with the disconnection between the different pages of magazines, showing that the values of our society are “mad” (as Berger put it). The specific and careful placement of advertisements in a magazine show that we can be shallow (such as showing a luxurious woman on vacation beside a photo of sickly refugees in Pakistan).
