Drawing & Imaging: Color

Towards the end our class focused on color theory. We first made color wheels and various color swatches before then moving onto the Kandinsky circle inspired pieces (as pictured above – image 1). With these pieces, we experimented with the way colors work together and were able to look over the different effects that resulted (such as how complementary colors, when next to each other, make each other pop). After this, we did a Chuck Close inspired piece (image 2). Notes taken from this were:

  • Optical blending (stepping back and having it all blend and be cohesive – mosaic like)
  • Considering shape, but even more so considering colors and color tones (which hues fade into the background? Which hues pop out at you?)

As someone who’s only ever tried to most accurately match the colors of what it is I’m depicting when painting, I stepped out of my comfort zone when doing the Chuck Close inspired piece and enjoyed making it.
