Time Project 3: Body as a Witness

Project 2 – Body as Witness (External Time)

Prompt:Find an event, a happening, an action (it could be something that repeats/cycles or happens once – it could be humble in scope/scale or grand and spectacular). Place your self, your body, in relation to this event and become ‘witness’ to it. What does it mean to witness an event? Where and how do you place yourself in relation to the event? How can you document and/or crystalize this experience in a series of images to then impart the experience to another individual (the viewer)? After developing and image series and/or documenting the event – form a 2D printed image sequence using Adobe InDesign.  Be sure that the mode of display/presentation is appropriate to and compliments the content of your piece.

What I decided to do for this project was look back on a past relationship. I started by printing several images we took from our time and a poem written for me from the beginning of our relationship. I took that a cut it up, wrote over it and made it mine, made it make sense for the end. I used my favorite medium: collage to show my looking back and witnessing this relationship. It was very reminiscent for me to make. I used crumpled tracing paper, a material used occasionally in my work, to give a distant and old feeling.

I also created a sound piece to experiment, though it didn’t come out as clearly as I hoped. I used old voice messages and clips from movies and songs we appreciated and connect to how I feel.

The music track is very loud on this recording and I am still in the process of figuring it out on how to hear it better through it.
