IDS2 – Project 1 : Traces, Psychogeography, Defining contexts

Part 1: Walk in an area of New York City of your choice that you have a particular creative interest in. Walk spontaneously; do not have any pre-determined route in mind. Just walk and keep your sensors and ideas open, look at everything that captures your attention, particularly connected to people, social interactions. This may be trash or sounds or green spaces or whatever you connect to people,. Take photos; make sketches; draw a small map of where and how you walked, how you envisioned your experience. Write down a list of some key words from your walk.

Part 2: Based on your walk, exploration and findings produce a piece responding to your experience in these places. Think as artist-designer, but also a curator. Your project should explain someone how one might experience that location, through your eyes.

In this project I used fictional writing as a new skill that I wanted to use as I never do this. I noticed on my walk (around my neighborhood, Park Slope) that on every block people would leave “gifts” or “offering” to the world and to their neighbors. I find this always fascinating, ” Whose were these and what did they do with them, and what are they now doing without them?”

So after many a brainstorms I decided to write fictional stories about the objects and their previous lives before their nexts.
