Lace as a…

This is a lace collar and vestee from 17th century Europe. I chose this Object from the MET’s online collection. It was a gift of The Lady Reigate in memory of her mother, Mrs. William Redmond Cross. I chose this Object because it is from Europe, where Lace was originally made. Also, lace was an exclusive fabric for the upperclass/royalty because of it’s high prices due to the fine craftsmanship required. There are 2 types of lace – Needle and Bobbin. This item is made from needle lace – made with a single needle and thread.

The second Object too, similar to the first one, I chose because is a representation of lace worn by Royalty. However, this is a painting. I chose this object from Tate’s online collection. This colorful artwork represents the lace of  Golden Queen Anne’s Lace. I related this artwork to not only the fabric meaning of lace, but also laced which means mixing of another harmful substance without the knowledge of the consumer. I see that meaning in this painting because of it’s abstract nature where different colors come together. I relate the colors to different substances being mixed together.

The final representation of my word is one of my own drawings. If my word were a performance it would be an acrobatics performance with ribbons. I picture this to be word lace because, like shoelaces, the acrobats are very flexible and bend in different directions. In their performance, the acrobats work together, overlap/intertwine and different acts and their motions remind of laces. (Left most drawing)
