Mycelium Project

For this Mycelium project, we used a fungus to make sustainable moulds. This was achieved by adding flour and water to the mushrooms. After a week or two, i observed a white substance starting to form, as can be seen in my first picture.

My idea for the creation of this project is a Mycelium Night Lamp. Inspired by the suggestions given in class – bowl, cups, jars etc, I decided to take it a step further as to create holes in this structure to make it a nigh lamp for practical purposes. Although it may be something we can eat, I doubt any of us actually would out of it, so it could be a storage unit for objects or in my case, a lamp.

To start, I filled this jar using the growing mycelium and added more flour to it. After over a week, the white substance started to grow again. I then broke the jar to get the mycelium out and started carving in with a blade. However, I faced difficulties during this process as the mycelium would break apart in chunks. Below are my process pictures from the sketch till the actual prototype. This project was very inspiration and fun to learn how to play with materials and work sustainable.
