Figure Drawing

Throughout the two weeks of gesture drawing, I think I improved immensely. In each session I tried different techniques and found the ones that worked best for me. I personally like working with condensed charcoal better because I like showing a deep contrast between dark and light and being able to make a rich mark. I enjoyed the scribbling technique I experimented with best, which can be seen in photographs 28 and 29. I think this technique was successful in particular because I did not lift my charcoal off my paper, creating a fluid motion as the figure should be drawn in this organic matter. I also found that creating shapes to make the figure worked in my favor of accuracy and style. Creating shapes allowed me to exaggerate the parts closer to me and go back to shade the shapes of contrast. I continued to struggle with beginning a figure drawing from negative space, which I would like to work on in the future. I think my best work came out of the 2-5 minute poses and the extended poses. As an artist, I like to pay attention to detail and it shows within my gesture drawings. I would like to improve on getting a general idea of the figure from 1 minute poses as well as experiment with different techniques that work well with a limited amount of time.
