sustainable systems final: patched garment

Artist Statement:

For my final sustainable systems project, I decided to collect a bunch of clothes that people left behind in the laundry room in my dorm and patch them together to create something new. I started off only wanting to create a top however, in order to utilize every piece of fabric there is left, I had to create a matching mini skirt as well and I am actually quite pleased with the product. The color blocking actually worked in my favor and the outcome does not look too bad. Throughout creating this garment, it made me realize just how synthetic most of the fabrics I used were, they were mostly jersey and athletic fabric which are fabrics that require much chemical and products to make. Fast fashion is dominated by synthetic fabrics which are the most harmful of them all. I hope this project successfully reflects just how wasteful the fashion industry is and I hope it also gives awareness so people would stop investing so much money in fast fashion.
