Sustainable system: mycelium

The mycelium mushroom project was a fun project to do but sadly it did not work for us. We took the mushroom mixture and added flour and water to it and then shakes to incorporate the ingredients. After letting it sit for a few days, we realized that the mycelium turned slightly white and thats when we put it into molds to let it Harden. However, this was the part where we failed and the mixture did not Harden the way we wanted it to even if we put it next to a heat source. The mixture was still very loose and came apart easily when we tried to take it out of the mold. I was very looking forward to having this experiment work however, it failed or us, sadly. Its very innovative to use mushrooms as a form of packaging. This eliminates the use of plastics immensely. The video we were shown in class shows us a different perspective and a hopeful future of the packaging industry. I think the issue of sustainable packaging and the need to decrease the use of plastics has been ignored and overlooked too often. By using mycelium, it provides a much more sustainable future into packaging and its even a stronger and more rigid base than most other packaging materials like styrofoam or plastic. Mycelium is also compostable therefore, if you throw it away, it will grow back into the ground.
