Space/Materiality Final: Denim Jacket

For my Space/Materiality final, I was so excited that the theme was soft structures. It meant that I could finally create something with fabric. This entire jacket is inspired by one of my favorite designers; Faustine Steinmetz. She’s a fashion designer who specializes in denim manipulation and denim, being one of my favorite fabrics to work with, I decided to create a piece that was almost like an ode to her work. I paired the final outcome with a denim knitted scarf that I made for my studio bridge 1 and they melded together perfectly. Over the course of my first year at parsons, I realized that all designers are known for a certain aesthetic, for example, Alexander McQueen is known for his demonic, animalistic creations, Issey Miyake is known for her masterful pleat work, Commes des garçon is known for their over the top, avant garden fashion. Because of the close relationship I’ve developed from working with denim, I feel like denim is one of those fabrics that have the most potential and I think I’ve showcased it from creating this project. There are several manipulations in this jacket, including braiding, 2 different types of smocking: lattice and shell smocking, fringing, layering and shredding. With the jacket, knitting is also included as one of the manipulations. Denim is one of the less forgiving fabrics therefore, knitting was definitely the hardest manipulation. Other than that, I feel like denim worked surprisingly well with me. It was definitely time consuming, sewing all of the lapels by hand and braiding by hand. However, the final product was well worth it.
