INTRO TO FASHION: response

This particular concept caught my eye because it is something that I believe in quite strongly regarding fashion. I think a lot of times fashion becomes disregarded as a field of study just because it is not “academic”. Usually when people pursue a college major or a career, the idea of a academic major or a office career is immediately planted, and the idea of going to fashion school or becoming a designer seems quite preposterous therefore, people regard fashion school as something “easy” or “glamorous”. This is where this phrase comes in. I think fashion transcends pure academics. It’s honestly a field filled with such complexity. After diving into the field myself, I realized just how much math and science is involved in the laborious process of creating and designing a garment. Fashion is also so technologically advanced and most of that includes complex science and I think fashion is what showcases the beauty of science in the most respectful and accurate way.

I think fashion is never just about one feeling. Fashion often is storytelling; hence, the need for designers to create collections. I can understand why fashion feels like confirmation since it is an industry so heavily relied on aesthetics; it is important to make sure what is beautiful to you is accepted in the industry. It is this aspect that makes this industry so extremely cut throat. However, there are also some designers that I admire immensely that has transcended from this concept of confirmation. The greatest example is Rei Kawakubo. I don’t think she creates for confirmation anymore; therefore, she does not worry about what the people think of her designs rather she uses fashion as a convenient medium to dispose of herself; to express herself in a story.
