Drawing 1 – Standing | Waiting

Location: 96th street, 2nd Ave

Time: 5:32pm – 5:44pm

Duration: 12 minutes

Observations

  • entry / exit elevator to 96th Street Subway Station
  • glass enclosure with spider fittings
  • entrance faces 95th street
  • bushes on either side
  • services Q train
  • can hear the train moving below
  • paver blocks and tiles
  • close to East River, FDR Drive
  • can hear the loud roar of buses and bikes (services M15 & M96)
  • chatter of people walking by
  • people sit on benches with drinks, snacks / talk on the phone / listen to the music
  • skater shoots by though a sign explicitly says ‘ no skateboarding’

 

Drawing 2 – Sitting

Location: 1849, 96th street, 2nd Ave

Time: 5:56pm – 6:10pm

Duration: 14 minutes

Observations

  • covered white canopy over the plaza
  • diagonally placed white tube lights
  • just outside Rite Aid
  • cannot see into store as windows have a sticker with bright green foliage
  • small trees / plants make the plaza welcoming (also goes with Rite Aid windows)
  • little footfall towards the store as people prefer walking along the curb
  • al benches face away from the road
  • lights slowly come on, one after the other during this time
  • road gets quieter as no buses pass by/stop
  • man with glasses and striped shirt sits for the longest and looks around
  • he holds a reflective cane which he taps on the ground
  • periodically glances at me
  • others are constantly moving/stop for s short break

Drawing 3 – Walking

Location: 86th street, between 2nd & 3rd Ave

Time: 7:47pm – 8:00pm

Duration: 13 minutes

 

Observations

  • bench facing the pavement
  • cement pavement
  • breezy and loud with buses, bikes and ambulance sirens
  • night, with lights reflecting off the glass and metal on buildings
  • feels like New York
  • people walk by, more casually/leisurely/relaxed as they head home
  • listening to music, talking on the phone, friends walk in pairs, couples hold hands
  • groups of loud youngsters walk by laughing, chatting
  • many people don’t wear their masks
  • as people walk their dogs, they slowly sniff around
  • people sit beside me and smoke while using their phone
  • people have more time on their hands at night, they even notice me drawing
