Space/Materiality FY Workshop Report

1.Write which workshop you attended, the date, who taught the workshop, what were the basic topic(s) covered
Workshop: Quick 3D Sketch Model Making
Instructor: Avila Shulem
Date: October 7th, 2019
The basic topics covered in the workshop revolved around 3D modeling/mock-ups to make prototypes from different materials. The instructor covered simple modeling and basic materials that can be found at home. We also learned how to do quick, rough sketches of models.

2. What skills and techniques were demonstrated / what specific information skills/techniques/tools/materials did you learn about? If the workshop was participatory, what did you make?
Some skills I learned in the workshop were rolling cardboard, making a jig, using a template to mold cardboard, quick sketching, making a dress pattern with tape, foam rolling, using hot glue on fabric or glass to block patterns, scoring and cutting, making a foam core cube, and piercing. The materials used were, paper, chipboard, cardboard, tracing paper, tape, foam core, tinfoil, plaster cloth, rope, and paint. She demonstrated forming these materials into different shapes to imitate a final project. The tools used were a hole punch, Ola knife, stapler, pliers, and scissors.

3. How might you apply what you learned to your work in this class? Was the workshop helpful?

I could apply these techniques in making prototypes for my projects, such as for the abstract artifact. I learned many different techniques for modeling pieces; I can use more specific materials to model the materials I am going to use in my final piece. I found the workshop really helpful because I learned how to manipulate materials I never thought of using to make prototypes. I have always wanted to learn how to make clothing patterns and Aviva showed us a very simple method of doing it, which I am excited to try.
