Keith Haring-research project

For studio, Judie assigned us a political artist that we had to research. We had to create a presentation and then based on our research we had to create a piece of work that was inspired by that artist in some way.

I was assigned Keith Haring.

I learned a lot about how creative and how active he was in the art world in the 1980’s New York. Keith Haring went to school at SVA then he dropped out because he was learning and doing more outside of school than in school.

When He was diagnosed with aids, he became a big activist for the LGBTQ+ Community. He created lots of murals all over the world in his last two year to spread awareness. His work was admired by so many because of the simple but powerful messages, which he was able to create with his signature line work.

Because Keith was so passionate about making work that was accessible I decided to paint a denim jacket.

I was inspired by the amount of hearts that he used in his work, which he used to spread the message of love. I added symbols that I noticed that I used a lot in my own work and mixed it in with Haring’s line work.

this is the sketch I decided on.

I used acrylic paint and Mod Podge to seal in the paint afterwards.

This is how the Denim jacket turned out.
