What is Fashion?

Throughout the semester, I felt that my understanding of fashion has been expanded and deepened. For example, I thought that the topic of Fashion and Celebrity Culture was especially intriguing, and has changed my understanding of fashion. As Camille Charrière has mentioned in the Vogue article “What Is An Influencer?”: “Your number of followers is more important than anything else you can add to your CV. It has become your worth.” Nowadays in the modern society, fashion could not only be seen and revealed on the streets, but more predominatingly, it is being documented and spread on social media. In fact, sometimes fashion is all about people on the internet’s opinions and perception. I noticed that there is more of an emphasis on whether others on the internet like a certain fashion style or not, rather than if you like a certain fashion style or not. Influencers have to dress in order to get a response from their “audience”, in this case it would be from their followers on social media. For instance if an influencer’s followers are mainly teenagers, she/he would get the most likes on Instagram if she/he posts a picture of herself/himself wearing simple outfits such as a hoodie with sneakers. The reason being that in order to gain a certain audience’s acknowledgement towards what is fashion, you may need to dress to fit beneath certain subcultural groups such as “Hip Hop” or subject positions such as “age”. Although, people follow influencers on social media in order to be inspired for their daily dress practices, therefore influencers also need to take on the role of creating fashion trends in order to keep their followers interested. Before this semester I have never thought that the relationship between influencers and their followers could go both ways, in that I had only thought that influencers could simply wear what fulfill their aesthetics and showcase their style to their followers. It is very inspiring to realize how in our everyday lives what we wear and how we wear are all dependent on and being influenced by other individuals.
