Four bedrooms of different people with different cultures seem to be pretty interesting to explore, so I came up with an idea that readers can bring their curiosity to read these ten panels. I chose to mimic the style of comic to describe these four bedrooms, because I believe comic can bring a feeling that people can feel close to with visual impact.
During researching and creating my own work, there are actually many details that I have to think about it carefully. In order to perform a great piece, the ten panels should be organized in a clean and neat way but not too simple. The color chosen for the whole scene made me struggled for a while as well. And finally, I decide to just use black and white, because the research pictures of these Old buildings are almost all black and white which I cannot just put a random color to replace it, so I decide to use textures with simple black and white to build up the whole pictures. The order of the floors depends on the years of those bedrooms existing or the foundation years.
The reason that I chose the bedroom of Forbidden City is because I believe it represents the traditional bedroom of China well. Also, it belonged to high hierarchy people, who paid lots of attention to decorating it. There are many details that can be caught to describe and draw. For the other bedroom of John Jacob Astor’s mansion, firstly, its location was similar to our school address. That building was on fifth Ave as well. Also, the owner of this mansion was dead in the huge accident of Titanic, which makes it more interesting to make people wonder the story of that house.
For me, our family just moved to a new house recently and I only spent one month here during winter break, so I do not consider it as a past bedroom. The one that I drew is the bedroom where I lived for ten years. That room has all my treasures from a kid to a young adult. There were many things changed during these ten years, but many things kept same as well. I am not able to go back to look at it anymore because my parents decide to sell it. All the things become my memories. The current bedroom in New York is pretty easy to observe. I live in a school dorm and share my room with my roommate, so the space which belongs to me is pretty tiny and easily to observe everything here. When I was doing my research, the words I put into google really influenced the results. Also, by doing research, I can select the information which is useful for me and then get deeper into it. I do not have to learn about all the information on the website.
I would like to create more work with visual impact into it. When other people look at my works, they can get the meaning behind. At the same time, they can be able to get visual pleasure through artworks. By doing research, it can help to fulfill the meaning of creating that work and make me think deeper about it.
