Through the whole semester’s courses, I feel like creativity usually is the combination of personal imagination and research. I used to mainly depend on my own imagination with a little bit research to construct my whole idea into a complete project. In this semester, I learn how to use the resources efficiently and absorb some important elements from the information. No matter the resources are pictures or texts, they can be transformed into any ways and inspire me in many different views. In this particular assignment, I like to dig out the background principles to support my ideas in order to make it more practical and functional.
For me, I personally get used to on-site research because it is convenient to search though mobile phone or laptop. However, the information I get is usually not academic. I might just want to get some help or suggestions online to help me some of my living troubles and concerns. Instead, the primary/secondary source research is more academic for writing a formal essay. In my paper, I use primary/secondary source to explain some scientific principles or functions and using online resources to find out some common information like the plants can be used to cover the wall. I cannot say which is better, because some too normal information cannot be found in primary/secondary sources, but there are lots of shown in the online sources. However, usually primary/secondary sources can give a more authorized explanation. I would like to get benefits from both sources and use them in my paper.
Doing some research makes me feel that sometimes I thought I know it pretty well, but the truth is sort of different. Moreover, the research pushes me to get more new information, which can help me get some inspiration accidentally.
I think revision is really important for writing an essay especially when the essay is kind of long. The revision can help me to make the whole story more logically. Revision can let me be my own story’s reader to feel about the idea. I can also find some grammar mistakes to adjust the sentences.
For this project, my idea is based on building a place which can help people to release pressure and avoid the extreme weather. I did not have a good experience in Hogan Place when I first visited here. There is no indoor place for me to sit into to finish my research. Also, because I went there on a holiday, there were not many people here, which looked so empty without energy. I want to make this place into an area which has more vivid feelings, and people can actually find a place to sit to talk to friends, release their pressure, and even pet their dogs and cats. Besides, they can still be in nature. After that, I decide to create an “indoor park”, which has balanced temperature, and the whole building is covered by green plants. Therefore, I create a story about this building from first perspective to see the changes, and “my” feelings has been changed through the changed environment as well.
I consider my studio project as an objective object. I just design the building and try to create a nice atmosphere for people to walk in and release their pressure. For the seminar paper, I actually created a person as visitor of that place. Because the character in the story used to live in Hogan Place, so the character knows the history and emotions for it. It is more subjective for the character to judge about this place. Thus, I feel like one is objective but without any emotions, but the other give subjective opinions for this building with real emotions toward it.
Writing makes me try to feel the personal as a visitor to walk into this place. At the first time I came up with this idea to build an indoor park, I totally stand at the position of a designer. Thanks to my friends, after talking to her about my idea, she gave me some suggestion who imagine herself as a visitor to come to this place. I guess this became my inspiration of creating this story as well.
The project of studio does not really change in general but just add more details into the building. For the seminar project, I feel like I was keeping trying to make the whole story more logical and tried my best to interpret both character’s emotion and building’s function. My idea of how to write the entire story changed several times, but at the same time, the whole idea becomes clearer.
