Research Reflection

With 20 images that most define me as a designer, I can describe myself in 5 different key themes: dailyobject, conceptualization, casual, unisex, plastic. I usually get inspiration from daily objects such as hangers, toy packagings or key chains. When I worked at the restaurant as a hostess during summer vacation in South Korea, I got inspiration from the clipboard which was used as a menu and designed the collection of bag. Most of my designs have unique look, on the other words, they are conceptual. This is not only because I get inspiration from daily objects but also I am a person who love unusual, different design. Also, not only I prefer to wear but also design something casual, not formal. Likewise, I tend to design something look unisex. At this point, this unisex means that is something look more masculine than feminine. I am a designer design fashion product, especially bags, shoes, and eyewears, so that I usually use pvc fabric, acrylic, and metal.

After I organize 20 images, I find 3 research interests from 3 themes: conceptualization, unisex, plastic. First, conceptualization is kind of complex problem in the field of art. I sometimes do not understand artists’ thought when I see abstract paintings and sculptures at the gallery. Even I read the explanation next to the piece of art, I have hard time to catch what artist try to talk about. Also sometimes professors or peers do not understand my work because my designs are also conceptual, abstract. At this point, a question ‘do an artist’s idea and viewers’ interpretation ever coincide?’ comes up in my mind. I am curious which is important, artist’s idea or viewers’ interpretation. There is always a question about whether A piece of art which audiences do not understand can be accepted as an art or not. To use this question, I will start to research some pieces of art such as fashion and painting which don’t get comprehension from people. Second, unisex fashion is still ambiguous theme. Gender neutral fashion comes out since gender equality becomes important. In current days, many brands endorse and show gender neutral fashion, but a question ‘Can we tie unisex fashion trends to gender equality?’ comes up in my mind. Now unisex fashion means that men and women dressing alike. But sometimes unisex fashion makes confusion. When female model wear gender free clothing, people think she looks cool but when male model wear same clothings, people think he looks gay. Simple unisex looks such as a white t-shirts and denim pants are not in this case. But skirt for men and women both is in this case. Fact is that people still think it is strange if men wear it. So I am confused what unisex fashion is. To use this confusion as research topic, I will start to look up what unisex fashion is and its revolution change. Lastly, plastic is one of materials used to make fashion collections, but it is one of reason for global warming. This material is good source to make beautiful fashion, that is why it is used even it influences environment negatively. At this point, other material comes up my mind, they are leather and fur. These materials are used a lot in the field of fashion. But the problem is that explains that lots of animal abused and killed because of human’s greed. Nowadays, people still have argument about this problem. Many brands use natural fabrics instead of using animal skin and fur, however it is fact that natural materials are not people are looking for. It means that people already know the beauty of animal skin and fur. This is cruel but people keep doing this for fashion. To use this problem as a research topic, I will start to look up others’ arguments about this problem.
