7/10/18 Homework – Reading Response

After reviewing the assigned reading, I realized photography is influenced by more than what is seen through the viewfinder. The activities, objects, noises, and feelings (both emotional and physical) all have an influence over the image at hand. The sense of wonder a photographer gets, as well as their personal interests, passions, and feelings impact the shot. An example of this is how the sounds around the photographer as they take a shot give them more information about the location at hand. I believe you made us read these pieces in order to recognize these more subtle things that have the power to change the way we photograph. Paying attention to objects that are always around us, or searching for a sense of wonder and following it, are just a couple of actions that push our skillset and widen our opportunities.

The sense of wonder discussed is triggered by looking closer at the things I have become used to seeing. Looking at something I don’t normally pay attention to, such as the sidewalk on the ground, and fixating on it, allows my mind to wander. This wandering leads my mind to questions, such as: Why is it there? What is its purpose? Why is it doing what it is doing? Why do I not notice this in the first place?  Asking these questions and keeping my eye out for the things that I am accustomed to will allow me to trigger the sense of wonder Hiss describes as essential to ‘deep travel’ during the program.
