CULTURE JAMMING RESEARCH

Culture Jamming, also known as ad-busting and subvertising, is a phenomenon where anti-capitalist messages are portrayed through typical mainstream ad campaigns that have been digitally or physically altered in some way. An example of this is a Marlboro ad that has been changed to say “breathe” instead of “Marlboro”. The intention of culture jamming is to toy with and manipulate the viewers based on their emotions. Culture jams can come in many forms, like memes, videos, and viral graffiti. Others are flash mobs, ‘billboard hacking’, broadcast intrusion, and subvertisements.
