Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms

  1. Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constallations. Through its form we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.
  2.  Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.

Personally, I agree with both aphorisms because they state the basic principal of what fashion is and what it holds. I think fashion is always evolving and creating connections between people but at the same time, fashion is just as personal as writing a diary about ourselves. First, I consider fashion encapsulates the history and evolution of the world. As it evolves from time to time and from place to place. It is not created from a blank idea but from a previous one that can be shaped to serves a purpose: whether it is for protection, identity, beautify the body or to make a statement. In this manner, the different choices we make in fashion is what creates a “network” between people, making a community based on their identity and their choice. In this way, fashion is another medium that brings people together based on how they project to the world. However, I also consider fashion to be purely and intensely personal. The decisions we make each day to get dressed has to do with our beliefs, culture, and feelings. For this reason, the way we treat clothing is just like a medium, like poetry, to express and show who we are and for what we stand for. For instance, fashion is a way of learning about other’s people way of thinking and decisions making, beliefs, culture and how they want to project to the world. Whether clothing acts like a mask to face the world or it is simply who they are, it is something personal that everybody is sharing to the world.
