1 Articulating Beliefs

‘Articulating beliefs’ was a great start. The goal was to set down some of the things we believe in the context of teaching. This was an early assignment for Curriculum Development. By setting down what we believe we are articulating our biases. This is crucial. I liked this assignment because I think most of the time the things we believe act as unproductive walls. Beliefs are prejudices. We don’t move forward in learning new processes without a reckoning of our attitudes and taking stock of our mental habits. Often beliefs are paraded as virtues. But more often than not they are bad habits of thinking.

Is there a better way to start a course design project than to asking ourselves ‘what do I believe?’ I don’t think so. In other words, in this assignment we were asked to write about ourselves before we write about a new course. Almost as if objectivity, if it exists at all, starts by assuming that we can’t be objective. We can only set down what we believe. I have to say that this was the first year in my life where writing had become a part of my daily diet. I am not a writer by trade. It has been a mind altering change and, there is something deeply satisfying about it. Like confession as a cleansing ritual. ‘Articulating beliefs’ was a good way to start.
