Dior Ad 2018

Dior has been a major fashion brand in the history of fashion, and as an admirer of their work and their presentation, I see this ad as somewhat enticing, attractive and amusing. Overall, I really love this ad because of its’ color scheme, how the girl in these red and black decor clothes with the main label J’adior bag really brings out the color of the clothes in this grey-ish background. Not only do the colors attract, but also the attitude and tone of the whole image. It is interesting to see the background being more of a white hue than it is plain white in most ad campaigns, and in this case, the gray background really enhances the overall mood of the image. However, what I find most interesting is that she is holding paintbrushes and painting faces on the floor. This Parisian-looking-doll-like girl lying on the floor tummy-side is painting leisurely and attracts attention with her sky blue eyes really makes painting look sexy and fun. It’s kind of miss-leading with that gaze in her eyes and how she stares at the camera so sexily while adjusting her hand and painting on the floor. In my opinion, what is most successful in this ad campaign is her attitude because it shows a kind of interest but in the Dior sexy way. And the statement that I think Dior is trying to make is that fashion is a work of art. This is because the clothes and the girl’s attitude makes the whole brand look more sexy, but it comes down to saying that everything in this is art, and that even the main-label bag is art. Therefore, I think this statement is definitely captured in just the simple action of painting on the floor and I think it is executed very well. However, when it comes to gender displayed on an ad campaign, and how most ads are usually portrayed with females, I find this ad very one sided. Dior wants it sexy, but sexy can also be male. Dior wants this to be kind of simple, but men can also be simple. I wonder what would happen if a man started portraying all this and what kind of reaction this would have. However, the gender specificity in this ad contributes to the history of the Dior brand where it did start with Christian Dior and he did womenswear which is why Dior is so into female bodies and what they wear and how they portray this to the fullest of their potential. I think this gender quality of a female portrayed in this landscape portraiture image is executed well and this representation of women, though not quite empowering women but more like a woman playful and sexy does have a say on the woman but in a more older concept. I would like to see Dior empowering women and trying to caress the women body in a more powerful way.
