Kevin Peterson- Keyword: Protection

Artist- Kevin Peterson

As I was observing my surroundings in Union Square, I noticed that in this vast park, there was a certain section for children. There was a gate as if to block off certain types of people. As I see the children running and listen to their squeals of joy, a thought came across my mind. Who exactly are we fencing out? Are we fencing the adults out or are we caging the children in? In one way, the section is to protect the children and not let them get hurt. However, it also serves as a barrier for the adults in a hurry to their office and do not want little children getting in their way. When did this division occur and at what age do children transform? I searched up the keyword “children” and “protection” and immediately was drawn to Peterson’s artwork. He specializes in painting children against a rough background to convey the stark contrast of a child’s purity and innocence and the hardships of the adult world.

As you can see from his paintings, the children seem out of place. Their surroundings are in ruins and portrays an unnerving and unsafe feeling to audiences. However, based on their expressions, they do not look as though they are fearful. The innocence of these children’s minds protect them from the harshness of reality. The white dress, the bold colors, and the bare feet of the children all contribute to Peterson’s wish to compare realities of all ages.
